AIRBNB IN VANCOUVER-THE IMPORTANT STUFF!

AIRBNB IN VANCOUVER-THE IMPORTANT STUFF!

AIRBNB IN VANCOUVER – THE IMPORTANT STUFF!

Some people are wondering whether you can Airbnb in Vancouver, BC. Before April 2018, rental stays of less than 30 days were not allowed in Vancouver except for licensed hotels or bed-and-breakfasts in certain zoned areas. But due to high rental and low vacancy rates, the city voted to begin allowing short-term rentals.

In order to be eligible, you must live in the home yourself for most of the year and it must be a legal suite that meets all building and safety requirements. You will have to prove that your home meets all the fire safety and building requirements from smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors (when applicable) and more.

Check out this checklist from the City of Vancouver here!

A short-term rental can be an entire home, or a room within that home, that is rented for less than 30 consecutive days at a time. A short-term rental can only be operated from your principal residence – the home where you live, as an owner or tenant, and use for bills, identification, taxes, and insurance.

If you’re a renter or if you’re in a strata, you must have your landlord’s permission, or your strata bylaws must allow for short-term rentals. Your strata bylaws or landlord must permit the use of short-term rentals in your home before you apply for a licence. Non-compliance may result in fines of up to $1,000 per offence.

You will also need a short-term rental business license from the city of Vancouver. The license requires you pay an activation fee of $58 and has an annual fee of $51 you will pay each year.
